In another example of ad execs raiding my music collection for their commercials, the new Monster.com commercial uses a cut up version of Pere Ubu’s “Wasted”. Just last quarter someone was using a song from Magnetic Fields’ Holiday album. Do you think I could make some money loaning out my iPod for people to find the next great ad tune?

Today’s incomprehensible bit of racism is brought to you by Israel. In some ways I find this more appalling than the Saudization programs in Saudi Arabia.

My new favorite wintertime drink! Tastes a bit like eggnog, but with less fat!

Lin Tsung-kuang 王宗光 has done a better job than I could of expressing my views on President Bush’s recent rebuke of Taiwan’s decision to move towards allowing national referendums.

Of course I don’t think referendums are always the best idea, Taiwan only needs to look across the Pacific Ocean to California to see what a mess public referendums can make of a government.

Today’s paranoia is brought to you by the color orange. To the average person in the DC metro this means idiotic signs will be displayed on I-66 and I-270, which say things like “Report Terrorism”. Of course that is probably a good thing without that notice I may have let terrorism slide.

Those of you that are residents of DC can look forward to more big brother activity. Not to mention a quickly increasing tax bill to pay for the privilege of appearing live via closed circuit television.

“D.C. police have activated their Joint Operations Command Center. That’s where federal and area agencies coordinate their response to potential threats. Police spokesman Sgt. Joe Gentile said the department has turned on its 14 cameras located downtown, and more officers will be patrolling near government buildings.”
–NBC4

I am all for keeping the people safe, but the security measures deployed continue to offer the appearance of safety with no real substance.

“We conclude that the [1877 decision] gives Virginia sovereign authority, free from regulation by Maryland, to build improvements appurtenant to her shore and to withdraw water from the river, subject to the constraints of federal common law” –Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist

Take that King Charles I!

Welcome to North Korea, the happiest place on earth! A good article on the weirdness that is tourism in North Korea.

I spent most of Wednesday and Thursday cooking dinner for the in-laws. Unfortunately most of you weren’t there to enjoy my efforts so just so you can see what you missed this is what was on the menu. With 2 lbs of butter, it has to be good!

  • Deep Fried Turkey
  • Pot Roast (with potatoes and carrots)
  • Tofurkey
  • Stuffing
  • Mashed Potatoes
  • Mushroom Gravy
  • Green Bean Casserole (the real deal from scratch stuff, no Cream of Mushroom soup here!)
  • Sweet Potato Casserole
  • Cranberry Orange Zest Relish (ok I cheated on this one and bought it from Wholefoods)
  • Turkey Gravy (again from Wholefoods, but in my defense it is hard to make gravy from a fried turkey)
  • Corn (no work here)
  • Loaf of Olive Sourdough from Cenan’s Bakery
  • Pumpkin Pie (made with love from real pumpkins!)
  • Apple Pie (Amazingly good for being from Costco)
Did I mention that all of this was for five people? One of which was vegetarian? It would have been a perfect meal with another five people.

I had a good time doing making Thanksgiving Dinner. I think I will do it again next year if I don’t find a way to take two weeks Taiwan.
