Music

Katherine, Chris, Blake, and I went to see Elvis Costello featuring Emmylou Harris at
Some of the surprises;
- Emmylou Harris had a sandwhich named after her at the Childe Harold, although it no longer appears to be on the menu.
- Elvis Costello sounds great singing country songs and apparently released a country album in 1981.
- Elvis Costello breaking into that famous Santana guitar solo
- Adding the lyrics “Admit that you lied” in the chorus of the Scarlet Tide
- The songs from the Delivery Man are much better when performed live. I will have to give the album another listen.
Now to see if I still think it was worth it after suffering through a monday on 5 hours of sleep.

I am less than 24 hours into my love affair with the 1GB iPod Shuffle that Katherine surprised me with yesterday. I setup a playlist with around 2GB of my favorite music and told iTunes to load up a random mix. The morning commute into DC was a lot more enjoyable, and I found myself walking a bit slower than usual on the way up from Farragut West.
The picture above is only slightly smaller than the actual player.
Here is what has been served up so far.
- Jim Jennie and the Pine[barons,tops] (2)
- Elvis Costello(2)
- Supreme Beings of Leisure
- Beatles (2)
- Johnny Cash (4 one of which was a Beatles cover)
- Orbital(2)
- Depeche Mode
- Dead Kennedys
- The Clash
- Willie Nelson (3)
- Martyr Colony
- Prick
- Non-Agression Pact
- Blondie
- X-Ecutioners
- Röyksopp (2)
- The Legends
The auto-fill and shuffle functions are great ways to revisit neglected portions of my music collection.
As a total aside every time I listen to a Beatles tune the strange things they did with stereo always surprise me (even though I should know to expect the bass and drums in one ear, and everything else in the other).

I have been a huge Elvis Costello fan since I picked up a copy of This Year’s Model sometime after college. North is quite a bit different than his earlier efforts with The Attractions, and Burt Bacharach. I have to say that I enjoyed When I Was Cruel quite a bit more than North. The songs are very well done, but few of them are interesting enough for me to remember when the album isn’t playing. The standouts are “You Turned to Me”, “Fallen” and “Still”. With “Still” being my favorite. “Let Me Tell You About Her” is also good, but feels very sappy to me right now. Perhaps being married for a year has sucked the romanticism out of me. No that’s not it, I have always been afraid of getting cavities from anything this sugary.
