After a very poor experience at Majestic Cafe, my old favorite spot for nice Friday dinners, I am looking for a new favorite. Any suggestions? 2941 Restaurant would be a front runner, but it is a little too pricey.

I’m a friend of Holly Schieb’s and saw your link on her site. I used to live in Old Town Alexandria (August 1999 to June 2006) and now live in Los Angeles missing many of the great little restaurants that made up Old Town Alexandria.
I’ve been to 2941 and honestly think if you pay that much the food could be better. It’s nothing special or exciting. Basic steak, chicken and salads. The “gimmick” at 2941 is the bowl of cotton candy at the end of the meal. In comparison to the Majestic’s previous capabilities with interesting pairings 2941 comes off as blase.
Have you tried Talulah’s in Arlington? It is the same chef that opened Majestic.
Have you tried Trattoria de Franco or Bistro Layfayette in Old Town? Both have small intimate settings with a menu that tends to change weekly. Great for Friday night dinners.
Antoher more American but yummy restaurant in Old Town is Stardust.

Some good suggestions, I have had very good experiences at 2941, especially the seasonal selections, but it is a bity pricy for normal occasions.
