This Sunday, James and I headed out for my first (his second)Geocacheing adventure. The day was calm, but the temperatures were below freezing, with a couple of inches of snow on the ground. The perfect weather for using a GPS receiver to find a location and then searching around for a hidden tupperware container.
No really it was, I had been looking forward to a bit of hiking in the snow, and now we had a goal. It didn’t hurt that James was pretty sure he knew the general location we were headed for from previous trips to the Bull Run - Occoquan Trail. With only one mistart (heading a mile in the wrong direction on the trail) we found the Weird Stone House pretty easily. I managed to locate the cache first, so I guess this counts as my first find. My camera ran out of batteries, so I will have to wait for James to post photos.

Do you use the same GPS as James (did you guys share?) I posted to James’ blog — we’re curious to how your like yours. (Ours is working okay now but has some kinks.) We’re debating whether or not to take it to Peru since there are so few geocaches there and most are in the tourist areas outside of Lima.

James used his GPS, it seems to work fine, but I don’t really know how to operate it.
Definetly take it to Peru with you, if nothing else you can always find your way home. James has been playing with the google maps API to plot his adventures on the hybrid view of the map.

I have visions of us taking the GPS and that being the time we experience theft… imagine what the thief would think… what the heck did I get!?
I don’t think anyone has picked up our last travel bug drop-off (Tea House Bug) and we have been playing with the idea of leaving one in Lima that wants to get back to New Orleans.
We’re “tabmow” (wombat, backwards) on geocaching.com.

Definetly leave a travel bug that wants to come home to New Orleans, that would be awesome.

I am checking out all the info I can on geocaching. It sounds like a lot of fun. Is there anything I should know before I buy a GPS? Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.
