A Step In The Right Direction?
Recently I was talking with a friend (lets call him Ndugu) and Ndugu mentioned that he had seen Kurt Vonnegut Jr. shilling for Nissan, after recovering from my initial shock I hypothesised that he may have seen an ad for the new 03 Nissan Murano. I must have mentioned that I kind of like the styling of the SUV because the next thing I knew Ndugu was giving me a “If you buy an SUV we will mock you mercilessly!” Now I knew my friend’s were anti-SUV but this was a bit much, so I started taking a closer look at this particular SUV. The Murano has two drivetrain, options all-wheel dirve (AWD) and front-wheel drive (FWD), both drivetrains are equipped with a continuous variable transmission (CVT) codenamed the Xtronic CVT.
Since the biggest problem my friends seem to have with SUVs is their poor fuel economy an SUV with a CVT could make for some interesting comparisons. Time for a little more research.

Did you watch “About Schmidt” lately or something…that whole movie revolves around an imaginary character named Ndugu. It was a pretty depressing movie.

I think what bugs me is that the EPA numbers are so freaking wacky. I’ve never come close to getting them, and the one time I did, I was in 4th gear at 15mph or something. They need to reflect more normal driving patterns. Sure you might be able to get 20mpg in an SUV—if you’re not driving like a stupid soccer mom.

Regardless of whether the EPA numbers are a bit whacked (the reason i included the ConsumerGuide’s observed mpg) the fact is an SUV with a EPA estimate mpg of 23-28 is going to have better fuel economy than a coupe with an EPA estimate mpg of 19-26. So maybe you shouldn’t be so quick to judge all SUVs (or to stereotype their drivers).

An SUV with AWD, FWD, and a CVT? And look at the EPA-estimated MPG! A-OK! Sign me up PDQ!

Have you taken the Murano out for a test drive? Need to know if 2 people can sleep in it comfortably. For camping purposes and such, not for mini cooper menages.
